Making New Friends

Girl Scout Songs at Camp Wind-A-Mere
Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We've been friends,
from the very start.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

Camp Wind-A-Mere
Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.

You help me,
and I'll help you
and together
we will see it through.

The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
to keep it clean

Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be

I know there are people out there who will remember this song from Girl Scout Camp.  I know I do.  Sitting by the campfire at Camp Wind-A-Mere enjoying all the fun things Girl Scout Camp brought into my life.  Those were some of the happiest times in my life.  I cherish all the memories.

I suppose you are wondering where this post is going.  Well, I said goodbye to a friend last month.  I sent my beloved Bernina 1630 to a new home.  I was sad to see it go.  I spent many an hour with her.  Not all of them were pleasant.  She and I made several "wads", as I like to call them, together.  For the most part It was enjoyable and relaxing.

In her place I have new friend, my Viking Topaz 30.  I hope this friendship will be long and happy.  I have had this machine since October.  She and I have had a great time getting to know each other.

How can one form a friendship with a sewing machine?  It is easy.  Just as with a person, you must learn all the idiosyncrasies of the machine.  A new sewing machine is likely to produce tears, just as a friend will do .  A new sewing machine will bolster your confidence.  A new machine teach you to push the outside of the envelope, branch out, and try new things just as friend will do.  That is what I have been doing.  Along the way I have made some wonderful new friends that are actually flesh and blood.

Last week, while at a new owners class, I had the chance to help out another grandmother by embroidering an apron for her grandchild.  It was such a refreshing afternoon. I was so blessed by this chance encounter.  A new friend.

The presence of this new machine has ignited my desire to sew.  I find myself spending as much time as I can engaged in sewing activities.  Frequently I meet new people at the fabric stores.  Many of these impromptu conversations in cutting counter and checkout lines have made my day so much fuller and fun.  I find they make me forget all the aches and pains of aging. I for get for just a few minutes that my body is not as young as it once was.  For a minute I am young, healthy and adventurous. I even bought my first dress form.  I wish I had purchased one years ago.

I look forward to learning new things, and to meeting more friends.  I will always cherish the memories of my "gold" friends, but I am excited by the prospect of gaining "silver" friends in these my silver years.

Early Morning

Am I the only mother who requires a massive explosion to get their teenager moving in the morning?  I am so tired of this morning routine.  It takes several trips to her room to get her out of bed.  Once she is up, it takes constant prodding to get her moving.  There have been several tardies this year.  I feel there is a Saturday school in her future.

I now have visions of The Breakfast Club running through my head. Which character will she be?  Taylor plays three sports, so logically one could say she is the jock.  However, I know she recently went shopping at the mall with her partner in crime.  What did she purchase you ask?  Earrings, two blouses, and hair extensions.  She could be Clair.  She carries this massive purse to school everyday.  It contains all manner of necessities.  That would make her Allison.  I just don't know. I will leave it up to you to decide.

Why this topic on this morning?  I think they call it free writing.  A cathartic for the mind.  Just get these thoughts out.  I don't own Dumbledore's Pensive, so this is the next best thing.  Make room for more thoughts and memories, and bore the entire world with my strange thoughts.  I call that a win in my book.

I am writing this as I sit our brand new bar.  Well, the top is new.  After four years, we finally have a finished top and stools at our bar in the kitchen/den.  Each time Larry sees me sitting here surfing on my laptop and drinking coffee, he calls it our Internet Cafe.  It is nice, but there is no one to make my tall skinny vanilla latte.  Ask and you shall receive.  Larry just came in and asked me if I wanted more coffee.  This could be fun.

The evil teen is out the door, and she is only 10 minutes late.  Not  to bad in the grand scope of things.  Now for some quality time in the sewing room.  See you when I get frustrated with the latest project.  It shouldn't be too long.

And Sew it begins....

I know it is a cheesy beginning, but writing creatively has never been my strong suit.  There I go again...

I have completed my new sewing/guest room, and Larry was so kind as to buy me a new sewing machine.  I thought what better time is there to start blogging.  I know I can create beautiful garments and fabric art.  My ability to write is not on the same level.  I feel I am losing some of my skills now that I am a stay at home mom.

I follow my daughter-in-law's blog, and love reading about all the things she is experiencing.  I thought I would give her something to read in all her spare time. So, bear with me as I sharpen this new skill.  I promise not to bore you to death with all my sewing stuff.
